Pocketpair could have led with an island, a boss, or another wall of new Pals. Instead, Side by Side puts three human silhouettes on the poster. That choice is the interesting part of Palworld's next update announcement: the people around Palpagos may finally be getting more of the attention usually reserved for its creatures.
The update is planned for winter 2026, following the October 20 reveal. The name and artwork invite a companion theory, and players have already run with it. The useful story is how well that theory fits the clues, where it stops being evidence, and what a character-focused update could add to a game whose daily routine is so often about the next material bottleneck.
The announcement is short, but the artwork makes a choice#

Pocketpair's announcement gives the update its name and season, then asks players to wait for more details. There is no feature breakdown to turn into a shopping list yet.
October 22 clarification: John "Bucky" Buckley confirmed that Side by Side is version 1.1, an update for Palworld. The separate title is not a new-game announcement. That settles which game the teaser belongs to; it does not confirm a companion system or expand the feature list.
The poster does considerably more editorial work. Three figures share the frame, with a rifle helping identify the center silhouette and the other two designs providing the rest of the recognition game. Our read is Zoe, Auri and Saya, matching the interpretation in Japanese outlet AUTOMATON's coverage. That is an identification from the image, rather than a published roster of playable companions.
For an update called Side by Side, it is a pointed composition. The promise being teased feels personal before it feels geographical.
The three silhouettes line up with the poll podium#
The reveal arrived alongside the Global Popularity Poll results. The character podium was Zoe first, Auri second and Saya third. Seeing the same apparent trio in the teaser makes the character focus difficult to dismiss as background decoration.

That does not establish that Pocketpair designed the update around the final votes. Announcing two things together tells us how the studio chose to present them, not when either entered production. The stronger observation is simpler: the announcement gives players who care about these characters an obvious reason to pay attention.
The Pal podium tells a different story, led by
Sekhmet,
Solenne and
Chillet. Their popularity does not automatically put them on the update's content list. The poll is a separate question from what the new feature will do.
Why everyone jumped to companions#
The name suggests company, the poster suggests familiar people, and the Reddit teaser discussion immediately turns toward bringing more characters along. It is a coherent reading of the marketing. It is also where the confirmed announcement ends and player expectation begins.
A companion feature could mean several very different things. A character joining a party is not the same system as a character appearing at a base. More dialogue is not the same promise as a quest chain. None of those necessarily implies romance. Treating all four as one announced feature would make the teaser sound much more specific than it is.
| Possible reading | The connection, and what would confirm it |
|---|---|
| Companions | Familiar figures standing together suggest more recruitable characters. Confirmation would need a recruitment reveal or feature description. |
| Personal quests | The focus on people rather than a new region suggests character stories. Confirmation would need a quest preview, premise or patch notes. |
| Relationships | The title invites a closer connection. A relationship system still needs an explicit announcement. |
| New region or Pals | This expectation comes from past updates. A new map or large Pal roster needs its own content reveal. |
The exciting possibility is more time with Palworld's cast. The teaser has not yet told us what spending that time together will actually involve.
Where this fits in Pocketpair's post-1.0 plans#
There is useful context beyond the poster. In a GamesRadar+ interview conducted at Gamescom 2026, Pocketpair's John Buckley described plans for a specific, heavily requested feature after 1.0, alongside thinking about the story's next direction. He framed the work as more focused than another 1.0-sized overhaul.
That makes a targeted character update a reasonable possibility. It does not turn that older interview into patch notes for Side by Side, or establish that every comment about 1.1 describes this named reveal. The dates matter: Gamescom context helps explain the studio's thinking; the October announcement supplies the new title and window.
For players, the distinction is useful. An update can change the feeling of an existing world without adding a continent. Giving familiar characters a reason to matter after an encounter could make old places worth revisiting. That is our argument for why this direction is interesting, not a claim that Pocketpair has already promised those visits.
The next reveal needs to answer the everyday questions#
If the companion interpretation is right, a trailer showing a character walking beside the player would be the beginning of the explanation. The practical questions would still matter:
- Where do they fit? A party slot, a base role and an independent follower have different consequences for a team.
- How do you unlock them? Existing quest progress, a fresh quest and a late-game requirement would reach different players.
- What do they do outside combat? Dialogue, base interactions and travel behavior would give the feature a different texture from another damage bonus.
- What happens in multiplayer? A shared world's ownership and progression rules matter as much as a solo showcase.
Those are the details that would turn a good poster into a reason to rearrange a playthrough. They are questions for the next announcement, not missing instructions players need to solve today.
Our read: this could deepen the world you already built#
The appeal of Side by Side is the possibility that your next goal involves someone, rather than another production chain. After spending so long optimizing workers, breeding teams and resource routes, a little more personality in the world could be a worthwhile change of pace.
Keep the expectations attached to that possibility. There is no exact day for a countdown, no published recipe to stockpile for, and no released build from which to claim mod compatibility. When Pocketpair shows the actual systems, the question will be whether they make these characters feel like lasting company. For now, that is the most interesting promise in the image.
While at base, boosts Anubis's work speed by 20%. Increases efficiency by 30% if Sekhmet is also working at a Workbench, Workshop, or other related facilities. (Does not stack)
While in party, increases the player's Attack by 30% if all Pals in party are different species. (Does not stack)
Can be ridden. While mounted, changes the player’s attack type to Dragon and increases Attack by 5%.
