If your Surfent is grazing while crops wait for water, the Pal is not broken. Palworld 1.0 turned Surfent into a dual-role base worker with Watering 3, Farming 2, and a new Leather drop at the Ranch.
That change surprised players in a popular 1.0 Ranch-drop thread. The fix is simple: decide whether that Surfent is your water specialist or your Leather producer, then lock its work around that job.
What changed for Surfent in 1.0#
- Watering
- Level 3
- Farming
- Level 2
- Ranch output
- Leather
- Previous Farming level

The version change is bigger than a description rewrite. Surfent's Watering suitability rose from level 2 to level 3, its Farming suitability rose from 0 to 2, and its partner skill gained a Ranch behavior that sometimes produces Leather.
| Surfent job data | Before 1.0 | Palworld 1.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Watering | 2 | 3 |
| Farming | 0 | 2 |
| Ranch product | None | Leather |
Pocketpair's official changelog says 1.0 added Ranch suitability to more Pals and adjusted Ranch materials. Surfent is one of the clearest examples because the new job competes with an already valuable Watering role.
Why the Ranch wins your attention#
A base Pal works from the jobs it is allowed and able to reach. Once Surfent can access a Ranch, Farming becomes a legitimate assignment instead of an impossible one.
That is why a base can suddenly fill with Leather while a Water Wheel or crop line appears neglected. Surfent is doing a real 1.0 job, just not the job you expected from its pre-1.0 behavior.
The current Surfent Palpedia page reflects both roles. Treat that page as the source of truth when an old guide still describes Surfent as a pure watering Pal.
Fix Surfent's work assignment#
- 1Choose one primary role
Use Surfent for Watering 3 or Farming 2 instead of expecting both at the same moment.
- 2Open the Monitoring Stand
Change Surfent's work preferences for the base.
- 3Disable Farming for a water specialist
Surfent can no longer choose the Ranch while that preference is off.
- 4Use a fixed watering assignment when needed
Pin Surfent to the facility or crop job that is blocking production.
- 5Re-enable Farming for Leather
Send Surfent back to the Ranch when passive Leather is the current priority.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Best fix |
|---|---|---|
| Surfent shows Grazing | Farming is enabled and the Ranch is available | Disable Farming or remove Surfent from the Ranch rotation |
| Watering facility sits idle | Surfent chose another eligible job | Use a fixed assignment or watering-only preference |
| Surfent returns to the Ranch later | The active watering task finished | Keep Farming disabled during a water-heavy production cycle |
| Surfent grazes but Leather is inconsistent | Ranch drops are periodic, not a continuous craft queue | Confirm the Grazing state and give the Ranch time to produce |
When Surfent should make Leather#
Leather is useful across Pal Gear and other crafting, and passive production removes a hunting loop. A dedicated Surfent makes sense when you are crafting several harnesses, saddles, or armor pieces and your watering line is already covered.
Do not sacrifice a critical crop cycle for a resource you barely use. The same demand-first logic powers our smart 1.0 Ranch resource plan: choose the product first, then assign the worker.
For a compact main base, splitting jobs is often cleaner than forcing one Pal to bounce between facilities. Put Surfent on Leather, move watering to a second specialist, and use the 1.0 base-building guide to keep travel paths short.
When Surfent should stay on water#
Watering 3 is a meaningful upgrade over Surfent's old level 2 suitability. Keep Farming disabled when any of these jobs gate the rest of the base:
- plantations are waiting to enter the growth phase;
- a Water Wheel or other watering facility blocks production;
- cake ingredients are falling behind breeding demand;
- the base has no second Watering 3 specialist ready to take over.
Surfent is better in 1.0, not less reliable. The extra job simply means its work settings now matter.
