What Actually Moves Your Capture Rate

Most capture advice is a list of things that help. This is a list of things that help, in order, with the size of each one measured. Every percentage below comes out of the same model that powers our capture calculator, swept one input at a time against a single fixed target, so the comparisons are like-for-like. Top of the list, sphere tier, worth 99.5 percentage points on its own; the reference throw itself sits at 22.56%.

Every lever you control, ranked by how far it actually moves the number

One reference target, held completely fixed: a level 30 pal at 50% HP with the neutral species weight, thrown at with an Ultra Sphere and no effigy investment. That throw sits at 22.56%. Below, one input at a time is swept from its worst setting to its best while everything else stays put, and the swing is reported in percentage points. This is the whole guide in one list: work down it in order.

    Capture power is a flat number attached to the sphere item, and it feeds the steepest increasing curve in the whole chain. Nothing else you can carry comes close.

Read the ranking as an order of operations, not a shopping list
The swings are not additive, because the model multiplies most of these together and then squashes the product through a saturating curve. Upgrading your sphere tier makes every other lever below it worth less, which is exactly why it is first. Two caveats on the order. The world capture-rate setting scores high but is not a play decision: on official servers it is pinned at 1.0x, and it is also the axis our model fits worst, so treat its position as a curiosity. And a maxed effigy is permanent while a sphere is consumed, so across a whole save it earns its rank several times over. For an individual throw the working order is sphere tier first, then HP, and if both are right you are usually already done.

All 10 sphere tiers, and what each one is worth

Capture power is a plain integer on the sphere item, and it is the same number whether you crafted the sphere or bought it. The three rate columns hold the species weight at 1.0 and vary only the target, so you can read straight across to see whether a tier survives contact with a harder catch.

Displayed chance saturates at 99.5%, so a row showing that value is at the cap, not at a true certainty.

The practical reading: a sphere that looks fine on a level 30 target at half health is worthless twenty levels later. Between the Hyper Sphere and the Legendary Sphere the same throw goes from 3.37% to 56.22%. Carry the tier that matches the zone you are hunting in, not the tier you can afford to mass produce.

A maxed Lifmunk Effigy is worth a full sphere tier, and we can prove it

Every effigy rank adds a flat 0.5 capture power, and capture power is a single summed number: the model cannot tell where it came from. So a Pal Sphere at effigy rank 14 is not approximately a Mega Sphere, it is mathematically identical to one. These pairings are exact identities, not fitted comparisons, and they hold at every level and every HP value.

Why this makes effigies the best early investment on the list
Rank 15 is +7.5 capture power, and that is wide enough to cover or beat every gap between neighbouring sphere tiers except one: Exotic Sphere to Sol Sphere is 10 points wide. A finished statue therefore hands you roughly a free tier upgrade on every throw you will ever make, forever, and it costs nothing per throw. Collect effigies while you explore, not when you are already stuck on a boss.

The level cliff: why your starter spheres stop working so suddenly

Target level enters the chain through a steep decaying curve, and it is the single largest term in the model. On a Pal Sphere at 50% HP, the same throw that lands 41.19% of the time on a level 1 target collapses to <0.01% by level 50.

Nothing on this page rescues a throw that is three tiers under-gunned. Sphere tier has to keep pace with the level of the zone you are in, and when it does not, no amount of chip damage or effigy grinding makes the difference back up.

Beating a target down is the cheapest big win available

At the reference target, taking a pal from full health to a sliver moves the throw from 0.17% to 63.32%. It costs ammunition and patience and nothing else, it works on every species, and unlike the sphere it does not run out.

Note the shape: most of the gain is already banked by the time you reach 25%, and the last stretch from 10% down to 1% buys only a few points. Grinding a boss to a literal sliver is a good way to kill it by accident for very little extra chance. Stop somewhere around a quarter health and start throwing.

The back hold adds, it does not multiply, and that changes everything

Almost every input in the chain is a multiplier, which means each one is worthless once another has already driven the product to nearly zero. The back or leg hold is different: the native constant adds a flat 0.3 to the rate. Additive terms survive a collapsed chain, so this is the only lever here that still returns a real number on a target you have no business fighting.

What that bottom row means
A Pal Sphere against a level 80 pal at full health is a rounding error, a number the calculator reports as <0.01%. Get behind it and the same throw becomes 0.65%. Still terrible, but it is the difference between a lottery ticket and nothing at all, and it is why the back hold is the correct desperation play rather than a marginal bonus.

Four modifiers that move the number and take no instructions from you

These are worth understanding precisely so that you stop trying to play around them. Same reference target, same method.

    Every pal carries its own multiplier. 26 of the 288 pals sit off the neutral 1.0 value, so the spread is real but narrow.

    Alphas take a penalty multiplier on the whole chain, which is why a boss arena fight ends in a fistful of wasted spheres if you brought the wrong tier.

The species weight surprises people most. It is narrow in spread and wider in effect than that suggests: only 26 of the 288 pals carry anything other than the neutral 1.0, and the whole range runs from 0.8 to 1.5. Priced against the lever above it: clawing the worst weight back to a neutral pal at the reference target takes 5 effigy ranks. A stubborn species is a real cost, just not one you can do anything about at the moment of the throw.

Reaching a near-certain throw on a tower boss or Alpha

The hardest realistic case: a level 50 Alpha, beaten to 1% health, wearing the boss penalty. Bare sphere versus a fully kitted throw (effigy rank 15 plus a Capture Strength +3 module) versus that same throw taken from behind.

The short answer
A kitted throw first crosses 95% at the Sol Sphere (98.79%). Below that tier you are budgeting for a handful of throws, not planning a single one. Note also how much of the work the kit does: the same Sol Sphere bare is only 81.61%, so the statue and the module are worth several sphere tiers of crafting on exactly this kind of fight.
You can never actually see 100%
The displayed per-throw chance is capped, so a saturated throw reads 99.50% and never higher. There is also a native forgiveness rule (capture.IgnoreFirstCaptureFailedCaptureRate = 0.5) that ignores a throw’s first failed check half the time, which means your true odds run somewhat above whatever the aim display shows. We model the displayed number, not the forgiveness, so treat every figure on this page as the conservative one.

Which of these numbers are the game’s, and which are ours

Palworld’s capture routine lives in native code and has never been published. What we have is a set of exact constants recovered from the game plus a curve fit to a datamined oracle, and mixing those two without saying so would be the easiest way to mislead you. Everything in the table below is verbatim.

What is modeled, and how far off it can be
The HP curve, the level curve, the capture-power curve, the internal-to-displayed transform, and the Alpha penalty are all fitted, not recovered. They were tuned against a datamined capture-rate oracle from an earlier build and reproduce every recorded point in it to within about five percentage points. So the rankings, the orderings, and the exact capture-power identities on this page are solid; a specific percentage is an estimate. When a single throw genuinely matters, trust the in-game aim display over any site, including this one.

What is the fastest way to improve my capture rate in Palworld?

Throw a better sphere. Capture power is the steepest term you control, and every other lever gets less valuable once your sphere tier matches the level of the zone you are hunting in. Once the tier is right, beat the target down: HP is the second largest lever you can act on and the only free one.

Is it better to craft stronger spheres or to raise my Lifmunk Effigy rank?

Both, but the effigy is the better investment because it is permanent and a sphere is consumed. Each rank adds 0.5 capture power, and capture power is a single summed number, so a Pal Sphere at effigy rank 14 is mathematically identical to a Mega Sphere at rank 0. How low should I get a pal HP before throwing a sphere?

Around a quarter health is the practical stopping point. Most of the gain from damage is already banked by 25%, and pushing from 10% down to 1% buys only a few percentage points while sharply raising the chance you kill the target by accident.

Why can I not catch a high level pal even at 1 HP?

Target level enters the model through a steep decaying curve and it is the largest single term. On a starter sphere the chance falls by orders of magnitude between level 1 and level 30, and low HP multiplies a number that has already collapsed. Sphere tier has to keep pace with target level or nothing else matters.

Does throwing a sphere while holding a pal from behind actually help?

Yes, and it behaves differently from everything else. The native constant adds a flat 0.3 to the rate rather than multiplying it, so it keeps paying out even when the multiplicative chain has collapsed to nearly zero. It is the correct play against a badly over-levelled target.

Are Palworld capture percentages exact?

The capture power values, the per-rank effigy bonus, the back-hold add, and the critical multiplier are exact values read out of the game. The HP, level, and capture-power curves and the display transform are fitted to a datamined oracle and carry roughly a five percentage point tolerance, so treat the specific percentages as estimates and the rankings as solid.
