Stop treating lockpicks like ammo. Every lockpicking tool in Palworld is a permanent Key Item, so crafting one does not start a new resource grind. It ends one.
The only catch is that Palworld hides three separate lock tiers behind Ancient Technology. Build the matching tool once, keep it forever, and those Copper, Silver, or Gold Key checks become a quick minigame instead of an inventory tax.

The three lockpick tiers at a glance#
Each tool is tied to one key grade. That makes the progression easy to remember: copper at 16, silver at 25, gold at 53.
| Permanent tool | Opens chests that require | Technology | Ancient points | Crafting materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lockpicking Tool v1 | Copper Key | Level 16 | 1 | 10 Ingot, 10 Paldium Fragment, 5 Nail |
| Lockpicking Tool v2 | Silver Key | Level 25 | 2 | 20 Ingot, 20 Paldium Fragment, 10 Nail |
| Lockpicking Tool v3 | Gold Key | Level 53 | 3 | 30 Pal Metal Ingot, 30 Paldium Fragment, 20 Nail |
The Technology chain is sequential. Version 2 requires version 1, and version 3 requires version 2. You are buying a permanent exploration upgrade, not a disposable chest opener.
- 1Unlock Lockpicking Tool v1 at level 16
Spend one Ancient Technology Point and craft it once.
- 2Add v2 at level 25
The Silver Key replacement costs two Ancient Technology Points.
- 3Finish with v3 at level 53
The Gold Key replacement needs Pal Metal Ingots and three Ancient Technology Points.
- 4Stop carrying spare keys on purpose
Keys still work, but the matching permanent tool removes the need to farm them.
Why the permanent label changes your early game#
The first tool is cheap enough to be a real level 16 priority. Ten Ingots, ten Paldium Fragments, and five Nails buy unlimited attempts on Copper-locked chests for the rest of the save. That is a much better return than most one-off crafts competing for the same materials.
Version 2 is the same decision at a larger scale. By level 25, the material bill is trivial compared with the time saved hunting Silver Keys. Version 3 arrives later because Gold chests sit closer to endgame loot routes, but its 30 Pal Metal Ingots are still a one-time payment.
A lockpick is not something you pack for a chest run. It is something your save file learns forever.
Use the interactive map's chest filter when you want to turn that permanent unlock into an actual loot circuit. The tool removes the key requirement; the map removes the wandering.
Mimog is the zero-minigame option#
Mimog's partner skill, Master of Unlocking, opens a treasure chest without using a key. In Palworld 1.0 the effect works while Mimog is fighting alongside you and has a 60-second cooldown.
That creates a clean choice:
- Use lockpicks when you are clearing many chests quickly and do not mind the minigame.
- Use Mimog when you want a single chest opened instantly or you dislike the lock controls.
- Use ordinary keys when you already have them and want to open a chest without waiting on Mimog.
Mimog is not a strict replacement for the permanent tools. The cooldown makes it slower on a dense chest route, while the lockpicks can be attempted again immediately. Think of Mimog as the convenient bypass and the tools as the reliable workhorse.
Open Mimog in Palpedia to check its current stats, drops, and acquisition routes before building a chest-running party around it.
How to make the lock minigame painless#
The lock behaves like a tension puzzle. Move the pick to choose an angle, then apply pressure to the cylinder. If the cylinder barely moves, release pressure and shift the pick. When it rotates farther, make smaller adjustments around that angle until the lock turns fully.
Three habits make it faster:
- Start with broad angle changes instead of tiny taps.
- Release pressure as soon as the cylinder resists.
- Once you find a good zone, narrow the search from both sides.
If controller input appears to stick, release both inputs, back out of the chest, and reopen it before trying again. If the same chest keeps fighting the controls, use its matching key or deploy Mimog. That gets the loot moving without turning a small input problem into a ten-minute argument.
The upgrade checklist#
- Craft Lockpicking Tool v1 at level 16
- Craft Lockpicking Tool v2 at level 25
- Craft Lockpicking Tool v3 at level 53
- Add Mimog to a chest-running party if you want the instant bypass
- Turn on the chest filter before your next exploration loop
Craft the tools as soon as their materials feel ordinary. Palworld has enough resources worth farming; keys do not need to remain one of them.
