Wildlife Sanctuaries got one of the biggest glow-ups in Palworld 1.0. In early access they were small, samey islands you visited mostly to poach a rare pal and leave. In 1.0 they are reimagined as protected conservation areas, established by an ancient civilization to preserve the natural environment, and each of the three is now a distinct destination with its own scenery, its own exclusive pals, its own rare materials, and a powerful boss guarding it. They are no longer a detour: they are proper high-value stops on the endgame circuit.

The other half of the rework is that the sanctuaries now push back. Defense drones patrol each island to eliminate intruders, sweeping searchlights across the terrain, so getting in is a stealth problem as much as a combat one. You choose your approach: sneak past the lights, or announce yourself and fight through. That single change turns a loot run into a heist.

Three sanctuaries, three environments

Each of the three sanctuaries has its own special environment with unique scenery, and that theming is not just cosmetic: it dictates which pals live there and which rare materials you can farm. Our map data lines the three up neatly by biome, a forest sanctuary, a volcano sanctuary, and a desert sanctuary, each escalating in level and guarded by a tougher boss than the last. Clearing them in order is a natural progression path as you gear up through the mid and late game.

Because each sanctuary holds pals you can only find there, along with rare materials, they reward repeat visits rather than a single smash-and-grab. The pals are the draw, but the materials are the reason you keep coming back, and the boss is the wall you have to get past to farm either safely.

Defense drones and searchlight stealth

The signature new mechanic is the searchlight. Inside each sanctuary, defense drones operate to eliminate intruders, and they sweep searchlights across the island looking for you. Stay out of the beams and you can move through the sanctuary quietly, picking your fights and reaching pals or materials without triggering the whole island. Get caught in a light and you are committed to the loud approach.

Neither path is wrong. The stealth route is the low-risk way to farm a specific pal or resource and slip out, ideal when you are underleveled for the boss. Going loud is faster and lets you clear the drones and the boss head-on when you have the firepower. The patch notes are explicit that the choice is yours, and the smart play is to match it to your goal for the run: quiet for a targeted grab, loud for a full clear.

Trespassing and the reworked crime system

Getting spotted ties into 1.0's overhauled crime system. The update reworked how wanted levels escalate: as your wanted level increases, stronger pursuers now appear, so setting off a sanctuary's defenses is not a flat penalty but a rising one that gets more dangerous the longer you stay hot. Sanctuaries are one of the clearest places you will feel that curve, because tripping the drones is effectively trespassing on a guarded reserve.

The escape valve is new too: you can now clear your wanted status by avoiding detection for a certain period of time, and pursuit can be disengaged. So a botched stealth run is recoverable. Break line of sight, wait out the heat, and the pursuers stand down, which is exactly the tension the sanctuary redesign is going for: a place where getting seen has consequences, but not permanent ones.
